Episode 3: Small/Medium Sized Department Health and Wellness Program Management with Lt Luke Peterson

Today, AZ speaks with Luke Peterson, a fellow lieutenant at her department. Luke has been a friend, fire service mentor, and driving force behind our department's fitness program.

Peterson is a 24-year fire service veteran and currently holds the rank of Lieutenant. As a long-time sports participant and enthusiast, he uses his love for fitness to lead his department’s wellness program where he’s been the coordinator for 15 years.

Luke recently started a business creating selling firefighter straps that help provide efficiency and safety to the job. He now offers over 20 straps that can be found at www.firefighterstraps.com

In this episode, Luke shares how he fell into the position of department fitness coordinator, lessons learned during his tenure, best practices, and potential pitfalls of guiding a program at a small/medium-sized department.

He also speaks about his pie-in-the-sky fitness goal for the department before turning the position over to someone else.

So what, now what??

Realize that it takes dedication, patience, and energy to get a fitness or health and wellness program off the ground. But time has been one aspect of the program that’s been on Luke’s side. He went to bat to get dedicated physical fitness training time and won. When you’re lost and don’t know where to start, start by fighting for allocated TIME!
