Firefighting is a niche career and although general strength and conditioning principles, dietary guidance and injury evaluation/rehabilitation certainly apply, if you've never done the job, you have one designation: an outsider. The fire service is a desperately underserved population and a lack of qualified and properly credentialed coaches is the norm rather than the exception in most departments.
Within Fire Departments, the concept of "train the trainer" prevails. Train the trainer works well with a new piece of equipment or a fireground tactic. It fails miserably with human performance, health and wellness especially when there isn't a qualified individual leading the team.
The stark lack of qualified health and wellness professionals is astounding, but it stems primarily from a lack of critical knowledge on making best practice decisions regarding health and wellness services for the fire department.
There are opportunities to be made, but the pitfalls will catch you if you're not prepared for what you're getting into
